What is www.publisher.co.za?

publisher.co.za is a publishing resource site intended specifically for South African self-publishing authors and independent publishers. It has recently undergone an extensive makeover and features loads more articles, tips, interesting links, book and publishing specials, and best of all – an all South African online bookstore offering a variety of secure payment methods.

The new independent publishing hub in SA

publisher.co.za aims to be the largest information and book sales hub for independent publishers in South Africa. It also aims to educate authors and raise the quality of self-published books and products by giving authors the resources they need to make informed decisions and enlist the help of professional service providers.

What kinds of products can you list?

These ones –

  • all printed books
  • ebooks
  • print-on-demand books
  • audio books
  • board games
  • card decks
  • educational and training resources
  • screenplays and scripts
  • sheet music

How much money can you make selling through publisher.co.za?

It costs you nothing to list on our site. When your book or product sells, you will earn these percentages on each sale:

    • General books and products: You make 70% of the retail price. For sales greater than 10 units per month you earn an additional 2,5% of retail over and above the 70% of retail for every month that sales exceed 10 units. For sales greater than 20 units per month you earn an additional 5% of retail over and above the 70% of retail for every month that sales exceed 20 units.
    • Ebooks: You make 70% of the retail price. For sales greater than 10 units per month, you earn an additional 2,5% of retail over and above the 70% of retail for every month that sales exceed 10 units. For sales greater than 20 units per month, you earn an additional 5% of retail over and above the 70% of retail for every month that sales exceed 20 units.

Because your earnings increase as sales increase, it pays you to promote www.publisher.co.za as your retailer of choice.

Who is responsible for packaging and posting?

General books and products: You are responsible. Most self-publishing authors and independent publishers already hold stock of their own books. When we receive an order, we will forward it to you with full customer details for fulfilment. Packaging and postage, which will have been paid for by the customer, will be reflected on the order and re-imbursed to you along with your earnings, at the beginning of the next calendar month.

We find this method to be best because it –

    • saves you the warehousing, packaging and handling fees that we would otherwise have to charge if we handled it on your behalf;
    • saves you unnecessary courier or freight charges getting your stock to our premises;
    • enables you to monitor exactly what is being sold, when, and to whom – you can use this information to keep track of sales as and when they happen, identify where more marketing may be needed, adjust your marketing strategy if necessary, and most importantly, build up a client database as you will have customers contact details.

(Note: The postage method used for local and overseas deliveries is Registered Mail, for which we recover R30 and R130 respectively from the customer at the point of sale. We have rarely experienced problems using this method of delivery.)

    • Print-on-demand (POD): Generally POD does not leave authors with much profit due to the higher printing costs. We have therefore devised a way to make POD a more lucrative option for self-publishing authors. For more information about our POD service and how you can make more on the sale of each book, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it us or give us a call.
    • Ebooks and audio books: Customers download the ebook or audio book at the time of purchase so there is no order fulfilment on your part.

When do you receive your money?

We transfer your money into your account at the beginning of every calendar month, for the previous month's sales. Payment will include your percentage of the sale and the postage costs collected on your behalf.

How do you go about listing your products?

    Single listings

Complete the Book Listing Application Form and email or fax it back to us. You are welcome to email us your short and long descriptions instead of writing them in on the form. Feel free to include reviews (must be typed out and submitted either in your email or in an attached word or excel document) and other relevant promotional information.

    Multiple listings

If you are the publisher of quite a few titles, you can submit your information in a word document or an excel file. Please refer to our book listing application for the details that MUST be included.

Alternatively, complete the standard Book Listing Application Form and download the Multiple Listing Application Form to add additional titles (one form required per title). Again, feel free to include the book descriptions and reviews typed up in an email or word/excel doc if you do not wish to write them out on the application forms themselves.

What must I supply with my application form?

You will need to supply a good description of your book. It is often easier to create the longer description first, then choose the most important information for your shorter description.

Remember that your short description can be no longer than two or three short sentences so it must be succinct and interesting enough to make the potential customer want to know more.

Your long description can be a few paragraphs. The more information you can give about your book, the better. You may include some sample inside pages as well - this is very helpful to potential customers who may want an idea of how the book has been written and what they can expect to get when they buy it. You can also include any reviews that your book may have received. These reviews should be typed out and included in the Description section of the application form or emailed to us using your book title in the subject line so that we can link the email to your application.

You must also include the following:

    General books:

  • An image of your front cover in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format

  • eBooks:

  • An image of your front cover in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format
  • The actual ebook or audio book file

  • Audio books:

  • An image of your audio book cover in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format
  • Your audio files: they should be placed in a folder and then the folder should be zipped. If you have artwork for printable CD labels and jewel case covers, these must be included in the folder.

  • Other products:

  • An image of your product in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format
  •

How many products can you list?
