What is www.publisher.co.za?

publisher.co.za is an online bookstore intended specifically for South African self-publishing authors and independent publishers. The book listing, order fulfilment and remuneration structures have been created specifically with the smaller, independent publisher in mind - typically someone who does not have the economies of scale or large sales volumes to cover the expense of traditional warehousing and distribution.

What kinds of products can I list?

    • all printed books
    • ebooks (all formats)
    • print-on-demand books
    • audio books
    • board games
    • card decks
    • educational and training resources
    • screenplays and scripts
    • sheet music

How much money can I make selling through publisher.co.za?

It costs you nothing to list on our site when taking the Basic Listing Service. When your book or product sells, your earnings are as follows:

        • 1–5 products sold in a month: 70% of the pre-VAT* retail price.
        • 6+ products sold in a month: 75% of the pre-VAT* retail price on the particular product that has achieved or exceeded 6 sales for that month.

Because your earnings increase as sales increase, it pays you to promote www.publisher.co.za as your retailer of choice.

*To calculate the pre-VAT price, take the www.publisher.co.za list price and divide by 1.14

How does the Publisher.co.za listing service work?

You have two options when listing your book in our online store. You can choose our Basic Listing Service or you can take advantage of our Full Listing Service. The two services, and their costs, are outlined below:

    BASIC LISTING SERVICE: Zero Cost

    General books and products

We upload your book information and book cover artwork at no cost to you. We also keep up to 5 copies of your book in stock to fulfil incoming orders. When we receive an order through the site, we package and post your book off to the customer and do whatever following up is necessary to ensure safe delivery. We also advise you when stock levels are low so that you can replenish the stock.

The only thing you need to do is get your stock to our offices. Remember: when using our digital printing service you can save on the cost of delivering books to our premises - we simply keep 5 books from your print consignment for bookstore sales fulfilment, and deliver the balance of the stock to you. If you would like us to keep more stock for you, you have the option of upgrading to our Full Listing Service (see below).

    Ebooks and audio books

Customers download the ebook or audio book at the time of purchase so there is no order fulfilment on your part. All downloadable products automatically fall under the Basic Listing Service. Electronic media clients enjoy the same benefits above.

The Basic Listing Service is helpful because it –

    • saves you the cost of setting up your own website and shopping cart
    • saves you the cost of packaging materials as well as the hassle of getting your books ready for delivery
    • saves you valuable time that would otherwise be spent standing in post office queues
    • offers quick and efficient order fulfilment, which means happy customers
    • provides statements as and when books sell so that you can keep track of your sales and stock levels
    • gives you the freedom to get on with marketing and promoting your book while we handle the back-end logistics of getting your book to your customers
    • offers outstanding returns of 70% less VAT of the retail price
    • offers convenient payment options for your customers, including EFT payments
    • guarantees NO FINANCIAL RISK to you, apart from the cost of getting your stock to us
    • provides a convenient, accessible and totally affordable sales platform through which to distribute your book
    • can be used in conjunction with our print service - when you print you can instruct us to keep 5 copies back for order fulfilment
    • can be integrated with your own online promotion and marketing strategy through special promotion coupons, book reviews, special feature articles, and so on.

FULL LISTING SERVICE: R180 for 6 months

    General books and products

As with the Basic Listing Service, we handle the entire sale on your behalf, but we hold up to 30 books in stock, instead of just 5. As orders come in, we process the order, package up the book/s, and post the parcel off. We charge a flat fee of R180 for 6 months (the equivalent of R30 per month) with the option to renew every six months. You can replenish your stock as often as you like, at no additional cost, provided your stock levels remain within the 30-book ceiling.

When your 6 months are up, you can renew the Full Listing Service or migrate over to the Basic Listing Service. Please note that the delivery cost of returning books to you when you move from the Full service to the Basic one will be for your account.

    Ebooks and audio books

Customers download the ebook or audio book at the time of purchase so there is no physical order fulfilment and the Full Listing option is unnecessary.

The Full Listing Service is helpful because it –

    • provides a cost-effective warehousing option for authors who anticipate higher sales volumes
    • provides a convenient, accessible and totally affordable sales platform through which to distribute your book
    • can be used in conjunction with our print service - when you print you can instruct us to keep 30 copies back for order fulfilment
    • can be integrated with your own online promotion and marketing strategy through special promotion coupons, book reviews, special feature articles, and so on.

When do I receive my money?

We transfer your money into your account within the first 15-20 days of the next calendar month following the sale. Payment will include your percentage of the sale, less the VAT portion. The very first payment may, but not always, take an extra month to process because beneficiaries are loaded up only when the first sale takes place and there are a few administrative processes that need to be set up, for this.

Is there any way to track my sales?

We provide a Remittance Advice when payments are made. Your Remittance Advice will detail the sales made for that month. If you have any queries regarding your sales, you can email our office or give us a call any time and request a sales summary. Requested sales summaries are generally supplied within 5 working days, or slightly longer if the request is made during peak business periods; our consultants will confirm the lead time when you call. Development of an automatic statement system is underway but, understandably, much programming, training, and testing is still required before we can roll the system out.

Am I limited to selling only through Publisher.co.za?

Absolutely not! You can list your book in as many online and physical bookstores as you wish. It would serve you, however, to direct as many sales through the Publisher.co.za store as possible because of the higher earnings you receive on each sale!

I don't have book stock yet. Can I still list and then supply books when a sale has been received?

Unfortunately not. Because books are dispatched within 5 working days from receipt of order, we require that all authors and publishers have stock available at our premises. However, we offer a cost-effective printing service, so we can print books for you before we upload your listing. This is a separate cost, payable upfront. You can then opt to have the books delivered to you or you can book them into our warehouse as part of our Full Listing Service (see service and rates above).

Can I list in the store if my book has been published in South Africa but I live outside the country?

Yes you can, PROVIDED you have a bank account in South Africa. At this point in time we regretfully do not make payments to non-South African bank account holders as all payments are made using EFT.

What ebook formats are most popular?

The most versatile ebook format is ePub. ePub ebooks can be read on a large variety devices, such as PDAs, tablets, dedicated ebook readers, iPads, and laptop or desktop computers (using ebook reading software). ePub formats are sold in all major online stores (Apple's iBookstore, Sony Reader Store, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Diesel, etc) except Amazon.

Kindle format (.mobi or .azw) is read only on Kindle readers and is the format distributed by Amazon. You can list Kindle ebooks in our store, however these books must first be downloaded by the customer onto a computer or laptop device, then transferred via cable to their Kindle reader. Unfortunately we do not have a direct-to-device delivery system.

PDF format can be read on any laptop, computer, tablet device, iPad, or latest generation Kindle reader. PDF format is a preferred format if precise content formatting and presentation is required. It's also a good format for customers who don't have eReaders, iPad or tablet devices, or in instances where the book may need to be printed out, such as workbooks and manuals.

How is my ebook protected? Is there DRM on the site?

We do not have DRM structures in place - in fact, the issue around DRM protection is a contentious one and viewed by many as being anti-customer. Customers who legally and honestly purchase an ebook are restricted by which devices they can read their book on. If they have downloaded an ebook to one device, they cannot read it on another. Furthermore, if they upgrade their e-reader, which they will inevitably do because technology is always changing, they will have to repurchase the same book for the new device. There are a wave of customers who refuse to buy DRM ebooks for this very reason.

Besides, DRM can be easily removed with a little know-how, so blocking a reader from sharing a book across multiple devices ends up being an inconvenience rather than a deterrent.

At the end of the day, it seems that DRM provides far more hassle and irritation for honest book-buying customers than benefits for publishers.

For more interesting discussions around DRM, read these articles: The Guardian, Digital Digest, Learn Out Loud, Tor (one of the first major publishers to drop DRM), Simon Fraser University.

How do I list my products?

Complete the Book Listing Application Form below and email or fax it back to us. You are welcome to email us your short and long descriptions instead of writing them in on the form. Feel free to include reviews (must be typed out and submitted either in your email or in an attached word or excel document) and other relevant promotional information.

What must I supply with my application form?

You will need to supply a good description of your book. It is often easier to create the longer description first, then choose the most important information for your shorter description.

Remember that your short description can be no longer than two or three short sentences so it must be succinct and interesting enough to make the potential customer want to know more. The short description appears on the search results page and, if too long, will not appear in its entirety.

Your long description can be a good few paragraphs. The more information you can give about your book, the better. You may include some sample inside pages as well - this is very helpful to potential customers who may want an idea of how the book has been written and what they can expect to get when they buy it. You can also include any reviews that your book may have received. These reviews should be typed out and included in the Description section of the application form or emailed to us using your book title in the subject line so that we can link the email to your application. You need to make the buying decision easier for your customer - remember, they don't have the luxury of being able to browse through your book as they would in a bricks-and-mortar bookstore.

You must also include the following:

    General books:

        • An image of your front cover in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format
        • 5 copies of your book, delivered or posted to: Quickfox Publishing, B27 Platinum Junction, Platinum Crescent, Milnerton 7441.

    eBooks:

        • An image of your front cover in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format
        • The actual ebook or audio book file

    Audio books:

        • An image of your audio book cover in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format
        • Your audio files: they should be placed in a folder and then the folder should be zipped. If you have artwork for printable CD labels and jewel case covers, these must be included in the folder.

    Other products:

        • An image of your product in either jpg, eps, pdf or tiff format

How many products can you list?

You can list as many as you like. If you list more than one product, you need only fill in your personal details once. The information for each additional title can be supplied in Word doc or excel format. Be sure, however, to include all the book information in your Word or Excel doc that is requested on the form.
